Mentor Newsletter Editor at National Youth Advocate Program

Purpose of the position: Parent Advocate Connections is a volunteer program that matches experienced adults, as mentors, to parents who have come in contact with the child welfare system. The purpose of this position is to produce a quarterly newsletter for volunteer mentors.   

Responsibilities:

1.           Quarterly, produce a newsletter for volunteer mentors

2.           Write and coordinate stories and photos for the newsletter

3.           Research topics in their area of mentoring practice and develop articles based on these practices

4.           Connect volunteer mentors with local resources through researching and publishing information about upcoming community events

5.           Follow NYAP policies and procedures

6.           Complete the minimum training requirements before the start of the commitment

7.           Attend optional mentor training, mentor and mentee joint training sessions and other group activities 

8.           Keep a record of service hours and fill out reports requested by NYAP staff

9.           Mentor Newsletter Editor reports directly to the program coordinator

10.      Other minor writing assignments may also be requested as needed.

 

Time commitment:

Approximately 9 hours per issue/quarter. Work may be done from home.

NYAP orientation (4 hours)

Optional initial mentor training (3 sessions, 9 hours total)

 

Qualifications: 

Must demonstrate good writing skills and organizational skillsMust demonstrate good computer skills

Must successfully complete a background and reference check

Must demonstrate tolerance and respect for individual differences

Must be able to work within timelines and meet deadlines

Must have access to transportation. If personal transportation is used, volunteer must provide valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance with a minimum of $100,000/300,000 coverage.

Experience in newsletter design and production is preferred
